    2nd day after surgery
I didn't sleep well due to the fact that I usually sleep on my side, and that's not comfortable due to the knee.

I got up and did my exercises (to strengthen the muscle and reduce the risk of thrombosis). It's possible but uncomfortable after a while, but that's a level of discomfort I can deal with. The knee is somewhat swollen, and while I can walk, I realise when I have to rest it. Right now, I'm sitting with my leg down, but I know I'll have to put it up soon to avoid pain.

I'm not so sure where this is going to lead: I have been given a letter for my orthopaedic doc, and I'll go and see him tomorrow. I read the letter, of course, and I now know that they found some damage, some fissures and a 'considerable' softening of cartilage. They did a lateral release and now recommend physio and treatment of my symptoms, whatever that may mean. To me, it doesn't sound great, but that might just be me. I guess that the surgery didn't manage to fix all the problems, but if there's less pressure on the damaged bits, there should be less pain, at least in theory.
I guess I'll find out what it all means when I see the doc tomorrow.

Of course, my mum immediately told me that I might have to change my diet, but I don't really think so. It's simply the first thing people choose to pick on because it's not 'normal'.

I just had a shower and feel more 'human' now. Showers are great.

    I'm home!
    I'm home and I'm fine.
I had a meltdown before surgery (the night before everything was so horrible I just didn't know how to cope), but apart from some problems involving needles and my veins, surgery went quite well, it seems. They were amazed how quickly I woke up after surgery, and I felt woozy but fine for a few hours. The pain was minimal, the ladies in my room were quite fun, so everything was fine until lunch was brought. First of all, it was not vegetarian and secondly, it was the type of soup I really hate (clear broth with bits of veg and meat). My stomach decided that I didn't want any of it, and while I had been hungry before, I was now feeling sick, so I decided to give lunch a miss and tried to sleep a bit.
I watched TV, dozed and read some magazines until I was feeling fine again. I asked whether I was allowed to get up and get dressed, but they hadn't provided me with crutches, which meant that I wasn't allowed to get out of bed for another 3 hours.
When I was finally allowed to get out of bed, I had a quick wash and got changed. The knee wasn't feeling too bad, but I couldn't (and still cannot) bend it.

[info]nitaq arrived after dinner and provided some fruit and entertainment.

The night was short and uncomfortable: I still had an IV line in my left hand (in case something happened during the night - I told them I didn't need it but they insisted on leaving it there) as well as the drainage thing in my knee, which made everything difficult.

The two ladies I shared a room with were quite fun but not exactly good sleepers: one of them spent the night walking around, the other one snored...so we decided to get up at 05:30.

I'm glad I'm home, the discomfort is manageable and I have some exercises to do. I'll have to go and see my orthopaedic doctor for further treatment.

Right now, I'm happy to be home, relaxing on the sofa and looking forward to some edible vegetarian food!

In which our heroine is making a list, and should probably check it twice
Holy crap, the Rivoli show is tonight. Tonight is soon.
We just had our last rehearsal, and Jenny will be over soon to help schlep everything over to the venue.

If you're planning on coming, I suggest you hit up Soundscapes or Rotate This first. Online tickets are sold out, but Laura phoned Rotate This and they have some tickets there. I'm sure there will be a huge lineup at the door, so you might not want to leave your ticket status up to chance!

It's great to know that we're looking at a full house both nights. Last year's turnout was pretty small; partly, I think, because it was the first year of doing two shows and it takes a bit of time for an event to fill up double its usual space. Plus there was a blizzard that weekend. This year's light dusting of snow will put people in a festive mood without impeding the streetcars.

I have to make sure that I have:
    Two gloves
    Three binders
    Three clip-on binder lights
    Four cases of handbells
Four and a half pairs of mallets
    Five folding tables
Two cardboard spacers for the tables
St. John's "Ring In Christmas" CDs for the merch table
One notepad/some ruled paper to make a mailing list
    One bunch of business cards

    Ninja Assassin
For those who are wondering whether they should see Ninja Assassin, know that it is about as fun and as terrible as most HK movies. It's pretty gorey, and a good deal of that blood is sooo cgi, but that's alright as it saves the production crew a lot of karo syrup that can be used instead to make quality pecan pies.

Pretty corny, very bloody, and Rain pretty much has his shirt off half the time. So if nothing else, it'll pay off the admission fee. Not quite the sort of movie I want to own and watch again and again and again, but damn, it's good to see a movie like that to keep one grounded in a world gone mad X3 ♥

Of course, obligatory weakening of ninjas quite inexplicably in order to make them combatable by anything other than other ninjas. This only fails in that they do such a good job of establishing how awesome ninjas are in the first place. I mean, one scene ninjas are made of smoke and murder, and yet later on all it takes to take out a whole clan are some gun-toting Euro-pol agents in hummers with lamps. *shrug* But it gives you Rain with his shirt off, and sword fights behind paper screens in fiery buildings, so not a waste of time.

    obligatory year-end introspection.
I'm sorry if i've been overly negative, rude, or profane this year. I'm not in bad spirits currently, and things are on the mend; but i think this coming year will be a lot better. I do understand that i haven't been a very good judge of character, in that i've trusted some people whom i shouldn't have. Well, let's see if i can fix that this year.

Sure, there's some stuff i'd like to get for the holidays; but when i stop to consider it's value to me, being able to pay my bills on time is equally important. This is further complicated by the fact that i'm losing a week of pay between the holidays, so my first check of the year is going to be a couple hundred dollars short. (Thanks, guy-who-owns-company.) So i'm not going to bother linking to my amazon wishlist, or mention pie-in-the-sky gift-meme dreams. Rather, if you want to make my holiday a little better, feel free to send some love my way. (Please don't feel put-off by my total honesty about this. I do not expect anyone to do so; no one should feel obligated. In fact, i'm going to feel guilty if some of you do, as i know you're no better off than i.)

Beer and skittles the Star Trek movie on DVD are nice, but so is having internets and electricity.

In turn, if there's anything i can do for you that won't compromise my ability to pay those bills, feel free to ask. I'd be thrilled to do whatever needs doing, be it computer repair, gift assembly, or even installing new light switches/a new kitchen sink in your home. My skills are yours.

Roy E. Disney (THE face of Disney...next to Michael Eisner for most of my life) died yesterday.

I feel very, very depressed at this news.

Now there are no more Disney's left at Disney.

Roy Disney was an amazing man, and an heir Walt could and should be proud of. He is what made Disney turn around so many times, and the passion and love he had for the franchise and the characters will never be matched again.

I hope, and I pray, that one of his children or grandchildren will take up the mantle he left behind, and keep Disney true to Walt and the visions he created.

    nervous nervous NERVOUS!!
I'm off to the hospital in a short while, and I am really very nervous indeed. I'm not good with medical stuff, to be honest, and I'm very scared of doctors, nurses and hospitals. I guess it started when I had to go to hospital as a child. I was four and seriously ill (an ear infection had spread...very nasty indeed), needed surgery and was stuck in hospital for 2 weeks.

I'm nervous and squeamish, but I'll be just fine. Today's going to be boring (I'm going to have some tests and they're going to give me all the details about the surgey I'm going to have tomorrow), surgery is tomorrow and I've been told that I'll be allowed to go home on Saturday.

I've packed my bag (toiletries, comfy tracksuits, my current cross-stitch project, my ipod, a book...and I'm going to take my computer, of course), and hope I'll be able to keep myself entertained for the next 48 hours.

I also have two translations to do: one for my dad and one for school.

And if I can go online, I'll be back!

I don't know what it is, but i've seen a lot of botched English recently. Did we all forget how communicate? It still read, just seems a little off.

Liz and i may be in the balt/dc area this weekend, stopping at the katsu bin for radio inventory. Anyone up?

    Also, at work.

My boss regularly gives me shit about being the biggest jerkoff. To the point that when other people jerk him off, he compares them to me by saying they pulled a ($myname). To this i responded: "Fuck you, jackass. I'm like the motherfucking Highlander, there can BE only one."

Then he sent me out the yard to pull the new headlight casings off the junk van, to swap them with the fogged junk ones on my own van. Had to pull the battery to do it, but MUCH brighter now.

I guess we're all going to be more careful from now on.

I called the hospital an hour ago (as I was told to do) and confirmed my appointment.

    Do not want!!
Today, my car didn't want to start and the clock re-set itself to 00:00. I was getting quite worried, but luckily, the next attempt at starting the car was successful, and it was fine for the rest of the day. Still, I'm quite worried, because this isn't really normal, and might lead to more problems.

Work was alright...and I don't have to go back for a whole month. The reason for this extended break isn't so pleasant, but it does feel great to have some time off.

Unfortunately, I decided to check my email just now...BAD IDEA!!
My boss wants to go and talk to my difficult group, and he wants information right now, which means that I'm working right now. I chose to ignore my phone because I want to give them as much information as I'm comfortable giving, not more. And that's easier if I write an email.
So I gave them a few facts about each student if possible: I've only seen some of them 2 or 3 times, which makes it impossible for me to evaluate them properly. I had 25 lessons with the group, by the way. I don't want to speculate about the internal problems, which is why I kept the email quite short. I think it's my job to evaluate a student's English, and that's what I tried to do. I don't want to tell my boss what I think about them and the group dynamics (except for the fact that the group changes completely depending on who's there during the lesson). I do not trust my boss because I know he'll tell the group what I said to him in confidence...he's done it in the past, and I don't want to be more involved than I have to be. I already told them that I believe the group should be split up and reorganised, and I think it's better if he talks to them in person.

I've said all I want to say, so could they PLEASE stop calling me now? I'm going to switch my mobile phone off now, and I'm going to ignore emails now, because they're annoying me. I feel bullied: they are trying to get more information, and I am not playing along!!!

It's Tuesday and I'm on my way to the doctor's. I need to get some paperwork sorted out for my hospital apppointment on Thursday. I'm really really nervous, but at the same time, I think that surgery is necessary. My is knee so sore at the moment! It really gets on my nerves, kills my concentration so on. I was struggling during the clown workshop because I really want to avoid moving the knee too much, which is very very difficult when I'm doing an improvisation with a colleague.

On the other hand, I'm really scared.

In which our heroine reminds you of her party with her rock star friends
In case I haven't already informed you, this Friday/Saturday is the Rivoli Christmas show.

Since you probably can't read the tiny, tiny poster they've made, I will tell you more about it.
Friday/Saturday December 18th+19th at the Rivoli (334 Queen West, near Spadina)
Hosted by Mia Sheard, performers include Hawksley Workman(!!!), Luke Doucet(!), Melissa McClelland, Kurt Swinghammer, Lori Cullen, Arlene Bishop, Justin Rutledge, Wilderness of Manitoba, Shoshanna Sperling & Teresa Pavlinek, and (of course) Pavlov's Dogs Handbell Ensemble, and a whole shitload more.

Now, not everyone will be performing both nights (I'm under the impression that Friday is the fuller bill, but you should probably come to both to be safe), but the Dogs most certainly will be.

Tickets are $18 (proceeds go to the Daily Bread Food Band and the Stephen Lewis Foundation) and are available at Soundscapes and Rotate this, as well as online at SixShooterRecords.com. Check out the Mouthparts+Wings blog for more details.

    crazy crazy
I had a very interesting and crazy weekend: first of all, we had a 2-day clown/comedy acting workshop, which I had been looking forward to. As unlikely as it may seem, I enjoy clowning. When I was doing my BA, I actually wanted to go to 'clown school' afterwards, but did not really make enough of an effort to actually do so. I guess I allowed people to convince me that it was a stupid idea. Anyway - I rediscovered my clown, and apparently did rather well. Yay! I had a lot of fun.

Of course, we decided to go to the Christmas market after school, which was also lovely (but closed at 21:00 - too early!!!). We went back to the hotel, watched TV and listened to music until one of the girls declared that she'd love to go out for a drink and a boogie...some thought it was a crazy idea (after all, it was 22:30 already), others rushed to get ready to go out.

night out and school stuff )
Right now, I'm trying to plan my lessons for today, but I'm really not motivated. I'm going to focus on Christmas activities today, simply because it's my last week at work, Christmas is around the corner and nobody can be asked to put down the biscuits and chocolate for long enough to do something more productive. I'm going to look at 'T'was the night before Christmas' and '12 Days of Christmas' with my more advanced groups. There's also a Christmas board game that looks like fun, so I'm taking that, as well as a quiz (for good measure). The beginners are more of a problem, because their vocabulary is really limited. So I've got a 'Christmas alphabet' and a Christmas-related game of dominoes for them. There's a nice little poem I could do with them if the slightly more advanced people are there. I'm still looking for a short text on British Christmas traditions we could read together and translate. 'Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer' should be OK, because the vocabulary isn't terribly demanding. I can always just use their book - we're talking about food at the moment, which isn't a bad topic for Christmas...

My throat is sore, and I somehow feel like a 'younger me': my voice always sounded like this when I was a student because I spent so much time with smokers (most of my friends were smokers and I worked in a very smoky environment: a bingo hall!) and also shouted a lot (both physical theatre and absurd theatre/clowning tend to strain my relatively untrained voice). I was permanently hoarse. So I'm drinking lots of water and tea and am determined to make my students do most of the talking today.

And I still feel more than a little bit crazy. The good kind of crazy, though.
